Race for Tadhg Fundraiser

  • Canterbury Swim School (map)

Kia ora whanau

We would like to invite you to take part in a meet Canterbury Swim School is hosting as a fundraiser on 9 November for one of our swimmers, Tadhg Giles.

Tadhg is 10 years old and has been part of the Canterbury Swim School family since he was 5. Last year Tadhg suffered a severe brain injury after having encephalitis resulting in his cognitive ability being seriously affected.

As parents, this is probably our worst nightmare – having your perfectly healthy child change so dramatically within a matter of hours. Previously a bright and outgoing child Tadhg has had to learn to walk and feed himself again, is now non-verbal, and has a multitude of other issues requiring 24/7 care. His life and his family’s have been changed forever.

Part of Tadhg’s therapy is coming to our pool several times a week. He was a keen swimmer before his injury, wanting to be a squad swimmer but not quite at that level. He still loves the water and is making improvements with his coordination and confidence. However, the ongoing costs of Tadhg’s care are huge; only some of what he requires is government funded - the majority is funded by his parents, Laura and Greg, so this has been an incredibly difficult and stressful time for them.

As part of the swimming community we felt one of the best ways we can help support Tadhg and his family is via a swim meet. We know the swimming community is an extremely generous and supportive one, and we are asking you to please join us and help us help this lovely young boy and his family get the care and resources they so desperately need.

There are competitive and non-competitive events. A flat $20 fee covers all events, whether you enter 1 event or the maximum of 4.

There will also be raffles and food items for sale at the venue; all proceeds from the event will go to support Tadhg and his family.

We would love to have you join us. Please see the attached flyer and further information regarding the Race for Tadhg event.

If you would like to help in a volunteer capacity at the event please click on the “Volunteer Form” link above.

If you cannot enter the event but would like to donate to help support Tadhg, donations can be made to this account: ANZ 06-0821-0688922-01.

Thank you so much for your kind and generous support. We look forward to seeing you there.
