Success for SCWC in Queensland

Eight Swimming Canterbury West Coast members recently represented Aotearoa at the 2023 Queensland Championships as part of the National Age Group Programme.

The meet was an overwhelming success for our swimmers and coaches, returning home with some impressive results.

Aquagym Swim Club

Representatives:

  • Charlotte Murphy

  • Emma Smith (Coach)

Summary:

“Charlotte Murphy has just completed an awesome week of racing Internationally at the Queensland State Championships in Brisbane, representing New Zealand. At the end of the meet, she came away with 4 out of 5 PB’s, 4x 16 & under NZ Records in 50 Back, 50 Fly, 100 Back and 200 IM, and a NZ Open record in the 50 Back.”

“We learnt a lot during this trip, how to be resilient through the long days, and hot temperatures (in the 30’s every day), as this meet was on another level compared to the ones in New Zealand. It was also such a cool experience to witness so many Australian Olympians race.”


Jasi Swim Team

Representatives:

  • Hamish Giddens

Summary:

“Hamish had an extremely successful meet, winning the 400 IM in the 16yrs age group with a 6sec PB!”

Hamish also came home with a silver in the 16 Year Old 200m Backstroke, bronze in the 16 Year Old 800m Freestyle, and silver in the 16 Year Old 1500m Freestyle.

Hamish attained some “really good” long course experience, along with some outstanding personal best times.


Vikings Swim Club

Representatives:

  • Brooke Bennett

  • Harrison James

  • Gabriella Smith

  • Todd Mason (Coach)

Summary:

“Very well done to Brooke Bennett, Harrison James and Gaby Smith who have competed in the 2023 Queensland Championships in Brisbane last week. They were part of a team of 30 athletes in the SwimmingNZ National Age Programme. Vikings Head coach Todd was part of the coaching team.”

“We are super proud to see three of our Vikings athletes (and our coach) don the Silver Fern and represent New Zealand on the international stage!”

“Brooke was 2nd in the 800m Free (17yrs & over), 4th 1500m Free (17yrs & over), got a PB in her 100m and 200m Free and two more medals with the relays- 2nd in the 200m Free Relay (15yrs & over) and 2nd in the 200m Medley Relay (15yrs & over).”

“Harrison had a podium finish with the relay he swam - 2nd in the 200m Medley Relay (15yrs & over) and a PB in his 100m Free.”

“Gaby had two podium finishes - 2nd in the 100m Breaststroke Multi Class, and 1st in the 200m IM Multi Class. She also achieved a paralympic qualifying time.”


Wharenui Swim Club

Representatives:

  • Lili-Fox Mason

Summary:

Lili-Fox had an extremely successful event coming home with bronze in the Multi-Class 15-18 years 400m Freestyle!

She also placed 4th in the Multi-Class 15-18 years 50m Butterfly, 6th in the Multi-Class 15-18 years 200 Freestyle, and 5th in the Multi-Class 15-18 years 100m Butterfly.
